Pat Cummins Set to Play a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The Australian skipper has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's chair of selectors the selector has stated that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series set to start on 21 November in Perth.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the likelihood of taking part.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and there are permutations around that, not only his injury, but further aspects," he commented.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a significant role. Hopefully it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons leading to absences from several home seasons in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the Ashes.

He mentioned that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and stated that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the first Test as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games in any case. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
